COGNITIVE VITALITY
A HEALTHY MIND IN EVERY BODY
Cognitive vitality is the best possible usability of higher brain functions. Disturbed by a number of non-neurological stress factors, these can be impaired. Funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, scientists from the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and non-universitary institutions are researching to decipher the anatomical and systemic basis of these disorders with the aim of avoiding limitations in people's everyday lives.
OUR
RESEARCH
Our scientific approach is cross-scale and cross-species investigation of cognitive circuits.
Workspaces
The overarching goal of our research cluster is to understand, treat and prevent cognitive impairment. Hence, we designed four strategically and thematically related workspaces which together cover manifold aspects of cognitive vitality. Our workspaces stand for innovative collaboration structures on the principles of neurocognitive circuit research and convergence. Within we bring together the fields of cognitive neuroscience, clinical medicine, and engineering/informatics which leads to research on fundamental mechanisms and their translation into clinical applications and technology.
Platforms
Our cross-species and cross-scale research on cognitive vitality in our workspaces is supported by our three interdisciplinary platforms. Here, causal links between neurocognition and behaviour are identified and characterised. Our three innovative collaborative structures enable the exchange and further development of our local expertise in imaging and computational modelling. Translational studies enable the application of the results of clinical research in care.
Training for Body and Mind
MULTI MODAL INTERVENTION
Our multi-modal study unites body and mind into a holistic intervention concept: Balance and fitness training promote stability and vitality, while mindfulness exercises strengthen inner peace and focus. An app-based emotion assessment supports awareness of own well-being – for a noticeable improvement in cognitive performance.

Building on a core nexus of mechanistic circuit, vulnerability, and reserve research, we aim to decipher mechanisms for brain protection against common aetiologies, brain recovery after adverse events, toxic waste accumulation and exhaustion, and neural resource mobilization. Meet contributors and understand why the collaboration of many different experts and volunteers makes a difference.
